This is the terrifying moment a giant wave battered the UK coast during Storm Imogen.

The picture was taken at Sennen, near Land’s End, on the coast of Cornwall and shows a huge mass of water crashing down on a cliff.

Storm Imogen brought heavy rain and high winds to the UK this week, with waves off the Cornish coast measured at 63ft (19.1m).

Up to 19,000 homes were left without power as a result of the storm at one stage on Monday, with more than 1,000 still without electricity on Tuesday morning.

Areas of south-west England and Wales were the worst hit as winds reached up to 100mph.

An RSPCA inspector remains missing after trying to rescue sea birds at Porthchapel Beach near Penzance in Cornwall.

A man in his 40s was injured in Bristol after trees fell on to a three-storey block of flats.

In Exeter, Devon, a father and daughter had a lucky escape when a 30m (100ft) tree fell on to their car outside their house, just minutes before they were due to leave for school.

The Met Office said conditions at sea were “phenomenal”.
