Amsterdam airport horror as person dies after being 'sucked into plane engine' in front of passengers

A person has tragically died at Amsterdam's main airport after being sucked into the engine of a departing plane.

Passengers and ground crew reportedly witnessed the horrific incident at Airport Schiphol and are being supported. The individual got stuck in the engine of a reported KLM Cityhopper Embraer E190, which was preparing to depart to Denmark.

It is not yet clear whether the person, who remains unidentified, was a passenger or an employee. Speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, witnesses said there was a "hellish noise" as the person was sucked into the jet turbine.

One said: "Many people saw it happen." A Dutch military police source said the plane was taxiing on the runway but had to halt take-off after an irregularity was detected with the engine, The Telegraph reports.

The plane was full of passengers when the incident took place. Authorities are hoping to speak to them shortly.

A statement released by Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) airport said: "Today there was a horrible incident where a person ended up in an airplane engine. Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this.

"The Royal Military Police is currently conducting an investigation."

In a separate statement made by KLM Airlines, a spokesperson said: "A fatal incident took place at Schiphol today during which a person ended up in a running aircraft engine. Sadly, this person has died.

"The flight concerned was KL1341 bound for Billund. We are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident at Schiphol.

"The circumstances are currently under investigation. For further information – once available – we refer you to the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee."
