Amy Winehouse's hairdresser reveals famous beehive haircut started out as a joke

Amy Winehouse's hairdresser has revealed that the singer's famous beehive style was originally something born out of him "taking the p***" ahead of a music video shoot.

He confessed that her hair got to such an extreme size and shape that she once lost her mobile phone in there.

Alex Foden told the Sunday People that he wasn't initially serious when he did the singer's hair in that style ahead of the video shoot for her single Back to Black.

“As a joke, I backcombed her hair massively and put an extra packet of hair in," he revealed.

“I said: ‘There you go, let’s go and show the finished look’, taking the p*** obviously, and as we came out the trailer everybody went: ‘Oh my God! That is it, that is the signature look’."

Foden said she and Winehouse then decided to "turn her into a caricature" by increasing the size and extreme shape of the style, to the point that it became her trademark.

"She once couldn’t find her ­mobile for three days," he added. “She scratched her head and it was inside her beehive.”

Foden said the controversial star was "just a normal girl" and that they were close friends throughout the time he was working with her.

He added: "She was a good listener and always wanted to know everything about your life.

“She wanted to make people happy. It was such a shame she couldn’t put her own theory into practice because she could solve anyone’s problems.”

This month marks a decade since Winehouse passed away at the age of just 27 in the wake of a long battle with drug and alcohol addiction.

She won six Grammy Awards and the Back to Black album reached number one on the UK Album Chart.
