Proving that age is but a number, Andie Macdowell this week turned heads on the Cannes red carpet with her flawless hair and make-up.

However, the actress, 63, looked very different compared to previous appearances at the glamorous French film industry event.

That's because she has swapped her trademark curly brunette hair – which she famously sported in Four Weddings And A Funeral and Groundhog Day – for silver-grey locks.

In a post on Instagram, the Hollywood star revealed that L'Oreal Paris, for whom she has long been an ambassador, were behind the striking colour change.

It is unclear exactly when Macdowell, who has three children, embraced the dramatically different hair shade.

However, her followers were big fans of her fresh look, leaving 23,000 and 19,000 'likes' on two of her Cannes posts.

Many said they were "obsessed" and "loved" her new colour, with others calling her an "ageless beauty".

The star – who complemented her hair with a scarlet lip – also revealed that make-up artist Val Garland was behind her glowing complexion.

Macdowell shared with her fans a tip she had picked up from her: "Val explained to me that red lips in the summertime should have a little bit more orange in them... like the sunshine and she’s exactly right."

Earlier this year, the star opened up about her decision to let go of the brown hair she had held onto for decades.

In an interview on the Drew Barrymore Show in February, she said: "It's not that I'm letting myself go, I don't think of it that way."

The Hollywood favourite – who was scouted as a model while on a trip to Los Angeles from her home of South Carolina in 1978 – added: "I don't know what's going to happen in five years, I may colour my hair again, but I'm enjoying it right now."
