Smartphone choice can tell us a lot about someone’s personality, claims new research.

Those who buy Android phones show more honesty and humility compared to those who choose iPhones, according to a study by researchers at the University of Lincoln.

The research also found that women were twice as likely to own an iPhone than an Android phone.

What’s more, it found that iPhone users thought it was more important to have a high-status phone, while Android liked to avoid using similar products to other people.

During the first phase of the two-part study, researchers asked 240 participants to complete a survey about characteristics they associate with users of each smartphone brand.

The second part of the study then tested these stereotypes against 530 smartphone users.

“Smartphone choice is the most basic level of smartphone personalisation, and even this can tell us a lot about the user,” said study author Heather Shaw, from University of Lincoln’s School of Psychology.

"Imagine if we further researched how personality traits relate to the applications people download.

“It is becoming more and more apparent that smartphones are becoming a mini digital version of the user, and many of us don’t like it when other people use our phones because it can reveal so much about us”.
