Andy Robertson declares Scotland want LEGENDARY status as captain taps into Tartan Army Euro 2024 hype

Andy Robertson says Scotland’s players are ready to take on the mantle of legends by reaching the knock-out stage of Euro 2024.

On the eve of the tournament opener against hosts Germany, the skipper insists the sole aim of Steve Clarke ’s men is to get out of Group A. They could become the first Scottish team in history to achieve it at a major finals after failed attempts at eight World Cups and three European Championships. Iconic status awaits if they can pull it off - but Robertson is adamant they'll handle the pressure.

At the Munich Arena, the Liverpool defender said: “That’s what we want (legendary status). That’s what we all want and we know that’s what’s at stake. What’s the worst that can happen? Join the list of so many good Scotland teams that failed to get out of the group? The flip side is that we can be the first team ever to do it.

“We’ve got lots of incentives but that’s the main one. To become a legendary squad, which we would go down as if we made it into the knock-outs. That has to drive us forward. We have a lot of motivation, like every country here.

“But we can feel how excited everyone is back in Scotland and, for me, that’s what’s driving us forward - to be the first team to get out of the groups. Because if you do that, you never know what might happen.

“We have to get there first. We’re in a difficult group with three good teams. We have to be at our best in every game to have a chance of doing it. If we are, let’s see where we are come June 24.”
