Aston Villa returned to the Champions League qualifying places – without even playing after top four rivals Tottenham were battered 4-0 by Newcastle United.

Spurs started the day in fourth spot on goal difference but the scale of today’s defeat at St James’ Park saw Villa rise from fifth by one goal on plus-17. Both Spurs and Villa have six games remaining.

However, Ange Postecoglou’s team were swept aside on Tyneside as Alexander Isak’s brace and goals from Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar ensured the visitors were never in the game.

Villa fans, who will see their side take on title-chasing Arsenal tomorrow, were thrilled.
