Angelina Jolie and her daughter Vivienne served up a major mother-daughter style moment at the 2024 Tony Awards in twinning teal red carpet outfits. While Jolie’s mini-me opted for turquoise-hued suit pants paired with a vest and bowtie, the Maleficent actress wore a custom Atelier Versace velvet gown featuring a structured bodice and sweetheart neckline – which highlighted some delicate new ink she’d gotten right in the middle of her décolletage. As Jolie took home her very first Tony Award at the Sunday, June 16 ceremony, she also hard-launched her surprising new chest tattoo, which fans believe has a special meaning.

The Eternals star’s bold yet delicate new tattoo, which was placed right in the middle of her chest, showed a sparrow seemingly in-flight with its wings spread out. This appeared to be a newer addition to Jolie’s ink collection, as she didn’t have it when she and her 15-year-old daughter attended the opening night of The Outsiders–a musical adaptation of the S.E. Hinton book that she produced and worked on with her middle daughter–back in April.

Jolie has yet to speak about the meaning of her new tat–although some fans on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out that swallows are symbolic of freedom, loyalty, or love–but it’s not the only recent ink she’s added to her extensive collection. At the opening night of The Outsiders on April 11, the producer showed off a new tattoo with sweet ties to Vivienne. “Stay gold,” the forearm ink read, which appears to be a quote from The Outsiders book and a reference to their musical project together.

Jolie previously opened up about her affinity for tattoos and the meaning behind her own collection, telling Marie Claire UK back in 2020, “I love them. They’re body art.”

“I don't think it's abnormal that someone who spends their life in other skins wants to claim their own by marking things on it that matter to them,” she added.”
