Last year's The Angry Birds Movie wasn't just the highest-scoring video game movie of 2016 (when it comes to Rotten Tomatoes anyway), but the second highest-scoring video game of all time – only one percent on the 'tomatometer' behind Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

More importantly, it made enough money for Sony to commission a second one, which is set to land in cinemas on September 2019, the ten-year anniversary of Rovio's popular smartphone series (via Entertainment Weekly).

Thurop Van Orman, a storyboard artist on The Powerpuff Girls and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy and supervising producer on Adventure Time, will make his directorial debut here.

Details on the story are thin at the moment, but we're sure you can expect more birds versus pigs and explosions.

Peter Dinklage, Maya Rudolph, Josh Gad, Jason Sudeikis, Kate McKinnon and Sean Penn were among the celebrity voice talent for the first movie. We don't know who will return for the sequel or what other famous faces lend their vocals to the second, but sequels are usually bigger and more expensive so we're expecting some more star power.

Before then, we are getting another smartphone-based movie in the form of The Emoji Movie, which stars none other than Sir Patrick Stewart as the voice of the poo emoji, a role that he described as having "real substance".
