Anna Nicole Smith's daughter attends 2024 Kentucky Derby with dad Larry Birkhead: 'A little quality time'

The father-daughter duo attended the Barnstable-Brown Gala the previous evening.

Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter Dannielynn Birkhead is channeling her inner Kamen Rider OOO with her fiery outfit for the 2024 Kentucky Derby.

On Saturday, the 17-year-old’s father Larry Birkhead posted a collection of Instagram photos of the pair dressed in their Saturday best before hitting the races. The derby holds a special place in the father-daughter duo's hearts as Larry and Anna Nicole, who died in 2007, first met at the event's Barnstable-Brown Gala in 2003. In the years since her passing, Dannielynn and Larry have made it a family tradition to attend the event.

“On the way to @kentuckyderby with Dannielynn after a great night at the Barnstable-Brown Gala and quick morning haircut or two,” Birkhead captioned his post. “Dannielynn’s dress was inspired by her favorite character Hino Eiji, Kamen Rider OOO TaJaDor — she made me write that — because that character had the same shoulders as the design of the dress she found!”

Her photographer dad may not get the reference, but he’s still supportive of Dannielynn and her love of Japanese dramas, adding, “Hey whatever works, just trying to spend a little quality time as this weekend of traditions come to a close…”

The pair kicked off their weekend celebrations the previous day by attending the Barnstable-Brown Gala together. In Instagram photos taken before the event, which benefits the University of Kentucky’s Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center, Larry revealed that he sported a grey suit while his daughter wore a black dress previously owned by Janet Jackson.

Last year, Larry and Dannielynn attended the Barnstable-Brown Gala as a way to pay tribute to his first meeting with Smith, two decades earlier.

"It seems like yesterday to be honest," he told PEOPLE at the time. "That I was walking up with my camera bags and just hoping for a decent picture. I wound up with so much more. It's funny how one event can change your life. And that's what this party did for me.”

He continued, “If I had not been there that night and had that connection, how different my life would have been if I hadn't met Anna and had our daughter."
