“We’re in a good place,” Hathaway said. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”
Disney announced a third feature installment with a script being penned by Aadrita Mukerji (“Supergirl”), with original “Princess Diaries” veteran Debra Martin Chase set to produce and “The Other Woman” screenwriter Melissa Stack executive producing. The third film will serve as a continuation of the original film series as a sequel to the 2001 and 2004 movies starring Hathaway and Julie Andrews. However, no casting news was shared at the time if either actress would reprise their respective roles.
Hathaway, who stars in and produces romantic drama “The Idea of You,” added that “Princess Diaries” was her “first substantial film role” and her second screen part.
“To be honest, it never occurred to me that I didn’t have the power of a point of view, at least creatively as it related to my character. I’m really lucky. My first substantial film role, the second film I ever did, was ‘The Princess Diaries.’ I was so generously invited into that process by Garry Marshall; he valued my take on being a teenage girl and elevated me to such a valued status on set that it never occurred to me on other sets that I didn’t have that same autonomy, or that same ability to collaborate,” Hathaway said. “I always wanted to be pleasant. But I also always thought that having strong opinions meant I was doing my job.”
The Oscar winner told Entertainment Tonight in October 2022 that she was “pulling for” a third “Princess Diaries” film.
“If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work,” she said. “We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”
The rumored plot for a third installment has long been that Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway) now has to teach her own teen daughter how to behave like a princess.
