Liverpool and Newcastle have been in discussions over a potential deal for Anthony Gordon, as the Magpies scramble to comply with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Newcastle are believed to be under pressure to make sales before June 30 to avoid breaching these rules and facing a possible points deduction. Several players have been rumoured to be on the move, but so far, no significant departures have been confirmed.

According to a recent report from The Mail, Newcastle have considered selling key player Gordon despite his impressive form for the Magpies. The former Everton forward managed 11 league goals and 10 assists in 35 matches during his first full season at Newcastle, but the club could nevertheless be forced into a sale due to financial rules.

Eddie Howe's side are understood to have approached Liverpool about Gordon, but negotiations hit a snag when it was suggested that Jarell Quansah could be part of the deal. The ECHO understands Newcastle's request for Quansah to be included as part of a deal has become a point of contention.

The Reds see Quansah as an important player for the future as they look to give Arne Slot a solid foundation to build from as the club embarks on a new era following Jurgen Klopp's departure at the end of last season. Gordon himself is no stranger to Merseyside, having moved to St James’ Park from Everton. He played a total of 78 first-team games for the Toffees, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists.

But it has been suggested that despite playing in the blue shirt, that Gordon actually grew up idolising players in the red. Here is what we know about who the winger supports.

Where did Gordon start his career?

The winger actually spent his early years with Liverpool’s youth teams before making the switch to rivals Everton in 2012. He then made his way through the ranks at Goodison Park, going on loan to Preston in the second half of the 2020/21 season, before returning to make an impact on the Toffees’ first team.

Is he a Liverpool fan?

There’s no definitive answer to that, but comments from Gordon himself on who he looked up to while growing up would suggest so. Speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap just a matter of weeks ago he named a Liverpool legend as his boyhood idol.

Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up,” Gordon said. “Coming from Liverpool, he was like a God in Liverpool, and he was an unbelievable player.”

Later on Gordon used a current Liverpool start as an example and somebody else that he looks up to. “My confidence comes from my preparation,” he added.

"I don't know where it comes from, I wouldn't say anyone around me is anything like that. I just love learning stuff, and throughout my years growing up, I've taken a liking to learning about psychology.

“There may be people who do the same thing as me, there may be loads who just haven't spoken about it. Some footballers like to think less, just turn up and play and trust their instincts. I just love the mindset of getting myself in that place before I'm already there.

“I saw Mo Salah talk about it - that's where I took even more interest, because I see him as an absolute machine and a winner. People like that, you're not going to go too far wrong following what they do.”
