Reported Liverpool transfer target Anthony Gordon has outlined why Liverpool should pursue their reported interest in him this summer.

Reports last month claimed that Gordon was ‘near the top’ of potential targets for the Reds. It was, however, also said that Newcastle could be looking for a fee of close to £100 million if they are to sell him this summer, despite facing concerns over the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability rules (PSRs).

The winger scored 11 goals and provided a further 10 assists in the Premier League for the Magpies last season. His form saw him called up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024.

He made his first appearance of the competition as a late substitute in the 0-0 draw with Slovenia on Tuesday evening. It came after calls for the winger to be used more due to his speed and ability to take on players.

Speaking ahead of the round of 16 clash against Slovakia, Gordon himself has now outlined what he will bring to the national team should he play in Sunday's game. And they are comments that Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes could be paying close attention to.

“I am here now and want to keep on going and establish myself in the team as someone the manager can’t drop,” he said in an England press conference. “I’m not there yet and have so much to do to get there.

“My main strengths are I am very direct, I’m obviously quick. I know I am a nightmare for anyone that I play against.

“I’m positive. Every time I get the ball, I always want to make something happen. I’m not a very safe player, I am always going for it. I am always trying to put people on the back foot.

“With players we have got – the likes of H (Harry Kane), who likes to drop deep – I think I add a different element to the team.”

The links to Gordon come amid speculation over the future of Luis Diaz, who has been linked with a move to Barcelona this summer. Paris Saint Germain have also been credited with an interest as they search for a replacement for Kylian Mbappe.

Should a big money come in then it will leave Liverpool with a decision to make. But Gordon could come in as a perfect replacement for the Colombian.

The ability to take players on and bring positivity to the team is something that will only be good news for Arne Slot as he looks to shape his squad ahead of the new season. And the winger's determination to become an 'undroppable' will surely be music to the new Liverpool manager's ears, should Gordon eventually rock up at Anfield later this summer.

England fans will be hoping that Gordon is given the chance to prove his comments right in upcoming games, and it may be something that Liverpool are watching closely for too.
