Anthony Gordon's brilliant reaction as Newcastle star shows his true colours yet again

Gareth Southgate has paid tribute to the 'exemplary' attitude of players like Anthony Gordon after the Newcastle United forward's limited involvement at Euro 2024.

Of those 21 England players who have featured at the tournament, no one has had less time on the field than Gordon. The Scouser has been limited to just one cameo against Slovenia in the Three Lions' final group game when there were less than 90 seconds of normal time left to play.

However, rather than sulking, Gordon has continued to impress in training and support his team-mates. It was noticeable, for instance, how a smiling Gordon was among those who rushed onto the field after Ollie Watkins scored a dramatic last-minute winner in the semi-final against the Netherlands on Wednesday night. The 23-year-old hugged Cole Palmer, who set up the goal, before throwing an arm around Watkins and congratulating him.

Watkins, like Gordon, had only made one substitute appearance before the Aston Villa striker came on and fired England into Sunday final's against Spain, which shows how quickly things can change. You can see why Gordon has vowed to be 'ready to go, regardless of my role, whether it's now or the final', having long bought into the team-first mentality in camp.

"The most important thing is that all of the squad are ready to come into the game and they have kept tight," Southgate said. "It's hard. There are 26 of them. You are disappointing 15 every time, but we spend a lot of time with those guys. Their attitude has been exemplary."
