Anti-Johnson Protesters March Near London's Russell Square

Demonstrators gathered near Russell Square in London on Wednesday, July 24, as Queen Elizabeth II asked Conservative Party leader Boris Johnson to form a government.

The protest, styled as a street festival and dubbed “Fck Boris,” featured a speeches delivered from the top level of a red London bus and a crowd that included some carrying signs reading, “Cut War Not Welfare.” In this video, people can be seen marching and waving signs denouncing the new prime minister and his party.

According to media reports, thousands were expected to attend. The event’s Facebook page said the street festival was convened to reject Johnson, who was described as “proudly racist, sexist, homophobic.”

Earlier on Wednesday, former Prime Minister Theresa May visited the queen to tender her resignation as head of government, news reports said. Johnson was elected leader of the Conservative Party on July 23 and assumed his role as prime minister on July 24. He previously served as Mayor of London and foreign secretary, and was a proponent of the “Leave” campaign for the UK to exit the European Union. Credit: Unite the Resistance via Storyful
