Anyone with an Android phone has been told to prepare for a major change coming into force next month. The move could see some users lose access to a popular service.

Google Wallet will be going away for anyone with an Android on a software version lower than Android 9 from June 10. The level of software was released back in 2018 so the vast majority of people should be unaffected.

However, if your phone is running on a previous version, then you will need to upgrade the software if you wish to continue using Google Wallet. To check which version of Android your phone uses go to settings and then about phone at the bottom of the page.

Click on Android version and this should reveal the information to you. A spokesperson for Google said: "To help keep Wallet features such as tap to pay transactions more secure, we must be able to send security updates to your device.

"Security updates aren’t available for Android versions below 9." If a user has an old phone which is not eligible for the upgrade, they will need to get a new one if they wish to continue using Google Wallet.

Older Wear OS smartwatches will also be affected by the change with customers needing Wear OS 2.x or higher to keep using Google Wallet.
