‘Apes’ Top DVD, Blu-ray Disc Charts, With ‘Emoji’ Not Far Behind

Twentieth Century Fox topped the national home video sales charts the week ended Oct. 28 with “War for the Planet of the Apes,” the third installment in the science-fiction reboot film series.

The strong debut of the film, which earned more than $146 million in U.S. theaters, sent Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Homecoming” to No. 2 after just one week at the top, although it still sold nearly 70% as many units in its second week in stores as “Apes” did during its debut week.

Another new release debuted at No. 3, also on both NPD VideoScan’s overall disc chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart: Sony Pictures’ “The Emoji Movie,” a computer-animated film based on, yes, the emojis popularized by smartphone-wielding teens.

On the overall disc sales chart, the No. 4 spot went to Walt Disney’s “Hocus Pocus,” a Halloween favorite ever since its initial 1993 theatrical release.

Rounding out the top five on the overall disc chart was the horror sequel “Annabelle: Creation,” from Warner Bros., one of the few horror films to gross more than $100 million at the domestic box office.

Annabelle: Creation,” which relates the backstory about the notorious killer doll from the first film in the series, 2013’s “The Conjuring,” debuted at No. 4 on NPD VideoScan’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, just ahead of Warner’s “Wonder Woman.”

According to NPD research, “War for the Planet of the Apes” generated 61% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc, and 9% from Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc. “The Emoji Movie” generated 45% of its sales from Blu-ray Disc, just a little less than “Annabelle: Creation,” at 48%.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week ended Oct. 29, “The Emoji Movie” debuted at No. 1, knocking “Spider-Man: Homecoming” to No. 2.

Warner’s “The House” slipped a notch to No. 3, while Universal Pictures’ “The Mummy” remained at No. 4 for the second week.

“Annabelle: Creation” debuted at No. 5.
