'Apocalyptic' rain batters West Country village

'Apocalyptic' rain fell not far from Somerset this evening (Tuesday, May 21) after the Met Office issued a severe weather warning. A weather warning for thunderstorms had been issued as a deluge of rain fell in the West Country.

Locals in the East Devon villlage of Wilmington reported 'apocalyptic' rain falling this evening. Videos from the scene show the sheer amount of rain falling, as one person said they had never seen anything like it.

And it comes as the South West is bracing for more heavy rain as thunderstorms are forecast to sweep across parts of the UK in the coming days. From tomorrow (May 22), an area of low pressure from the east is expected to bring heavy and potentially prolonged rainfall.

The extent of the downpour will depend on the path of the low pressure system, which could see widespread areas receiving 30-40 mm of rain, while some spots might be drenched with 60-80 mm.

There's even a possibility that some regions could be hit with up to 150 mm of rain. But despite the dreary outlook, the South West may escape the heaviest showers later this week.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page said: "The area of low pressure developing in the southern North Sea will push a band of heavy rain north and west across the UK."

He further added: "Areas exposed to the strengthening northerly winds are most likely to see the highest rainfall amounts, though exact details regarding the track of the low and thus where we might see the highest rainfall totals remains uncertain. Warnings are likely to be updated as more details emerge, and it is important therefore, that people to keep an eye on the forecast."

The forecast predicts showers for Friday, particularly in the north. A front from the Atlantic may bring a band of rain to Northern Ireland and western Scotland on Saturday. However, for many, Saturday will be a fair day with temperatures slightly above average..
