Apple Developing iPhone With Wireless ‘Over-The-Air’ Charging For 2017, Say Reports

Apple is said to be working on next-gen wireless technology for the iPhone and iPad which could be released as early as 2017, according to new reports.

The tech firm is said to be working on tech that can charge devices from a distance away, says a report from Bloomberg.

While some devices already offer so-called ‘wireless’ charging, power is not transferred over the air.

Products such as the Cupertino-based brand’s Apple Watch as well as Samsung’s flagship S6 smartphone use inductive charging that requires the gadget to be in contact with a charging pad in order to obtain sufficient power.

Over-the-air charging technology has proved elusive in the past as power tends to be lost when travelling over any distance.

Apple is expected to drop the 3.5mm headphone hack in its upcoming iPhone 7, which is expected to arrive later in the year. The incoming handset is also rumoured to feature a waterproof coating.
