Ariana Grande wore a pink choker on “The Tonight Show” to hint that she landed the role of Glinda in “Wicked”

"I was trying to subliminally tell you through the screen that I got it," Grande told Fallon of their Zoom interview a few years back.

Ariana Grande knew she was going to be popular — but she couldn't tell anyone.

While joining Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Thursday, she revealed to him that during an interview a few years ago, she attempted to hint that she'd landed the role of Glinda in Wicked, even though she wasn't yet allowed to tell anyone the good news.

"He knew that I was going through this audition process and I couldn't tell anyone that I had the role yet," she recounted. "I was like, sworn to secrecy, and two days before our interview I had gotten the call, and I was like, 'Are you sure I can't tell?'"

She had to keep the Ozian secret a bit longer, so she decided to give Fallon a clue during her interview, which occurred virtually.

"I was trying to subliminally tell you through the screen that I got it," she revealed to Fallon. "So I wore this big pink embellishment, this big pink choker sparkly thing. I was like, 'Maybe he'll think that's the fact that I got it.' It didn't work."

"But you were so sweet," she continued. "You were like, 'You should do more acting,' and I was like, 'I got it, it's okay. You don't have to say that.'"

Fallon jokingly played it off saying, "No, I knew it in my head. I kept the secret as well."

Grande was announced as Glinda, alongside Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, in Nov. 2021, and we've had plenty of sneak peeks at the upcoming movie since then. Now, both Fallon and Grande can talk openly about her realizing her childhood dream of portraying Glinda (originally Galinda) in the big screen adaptation of Wicked, which hits theaters this Thanksgiving.
