He’s been behind some of the most cutting comedy in recent telly history. Now Armando Iannucci – the brains behind Veep, In the Loop and oodles of Alan Partridge – is back on British soil to shoot his new show, the HBO space comedy Avenue 5.

The writer took to Twitter this morning to inform fans that the cameras were now rolling, posting a picture of a clapper board with the caption. “Here’s what I’m up to. Hush hush: in space no-one can see us film.”

The new comedy series stars Hugh Laurie, Silicon Valley’s Zach Woods, Frozen’s Josh Gad and Being Human’s Lenora Crichlow.

When The Hollywood Reporter announced Laurie’s involvement last summer, the House star feigned mock surprise about the show’s theme, taking to Twitter to tease Iannucci.

Laurie and the writer have a history. The Blackadder actor was a regular on series 4 of Iannucci’s Veep. Before series five, the Scotsman exited as showrunner to work on other projects, including the well-received Death of Stalin, starring Michael Palin, Steve Buscemi and Paddy Considine.

Just last week, Veep’s executive producer announced that is was time to say goodbye to the award-winning satire. David Mandel told the Press Association. “The things that Veep was originally making fun of, don’t really exist anymore.

“Veep originally, if you go back to Armando Iannucci who created the show, there was this notion of, ‘this is what politicians are really like behind closed doors’. There are no closed doors anymore.”
