Liverpool are continuing to be linked with a move for Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon.

The Reds were offered the chance to sign Gordon last month but rejected the proposal after it emerged that Newcastle wanted Jarell Quansah to be included in the deal. The St James' Park club were under pressure to sell players before the June 30 deadline to comply with the Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR).

After the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, Newcastle were no longer under immediate pressure when it came to player sales. However, it remains to be seen if the Magpies will be forced to allow other players to leave the club before the summer transfer window closes.

For the time being, Gordon remains a Newcastle player and there's no certainty over whether or not Liverpool will return with an offer. There may be an argument, though, that the Reds may already have a player who is perfect to fill the left wing role in Arne Slot's team.

Slot is currently preparing the Liverpool squad in pre-season training ahead of his first campaign at Anfield. Due to international competitions, though, some players are yet to return to the AXA Training Centre.

One such player is Cody Gakpo, who is with the Netherlands squad that has reached the Euro 2024 semi-final. Gakpo will hope to star for his country against England in the semi-final on Wednesday night, where a final against Spain awaits the winners on Sunday.

Gakpo has scored three goals with one assist in his five appearances at Euro 2024 so far. Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has utilised Gakpo on the left wing at the tournament, which is the same position that Gordon would take up in the Liverpool team were he to move to Anfield.

Gakpo has been used on the left wing and as a centre-forward across his first 18 months as a Liverpool player. Slot's arrival could be the start of the forward being used in his preferred position for the long term, but that could change were Gordon to sign for the Reds.

The form of Gakpo and the links of a transfer for Gordon mean Liverpool have a decision to make when it comes to which player they want to operate the left-wing position. Not to mention Luis Diaz will have a claim that he is the first choice for the position, whose future has also been the subject of speculation this summer.
