Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has told Arsenal that they got an ‘absolute bargain’ when they turned to Leandro Trossard after missing out on a move for Mykhailo Mudryk.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea were in the race for the Shaktar Donetsk man in last January’s transfer window. But it was the Blues who prevailed, completing the transfer for £89 million.

That led to Arsenal turning their attention to Brighton and Hove Albion’s Trossard. The Belgian completed a £27 million transfer to the Emirates Stadium in the same month.

Since joining the club, Trossard has come up with some big goals, none more so than the opener against Wolves in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Molineux. The three points took Arsenal back above Man City and to the top of the Premier League table.

Redknapp has now hinted that he believes that Arsenal got the better of the two deals, despite Trossard initially being second choice. Mudryk has had a stop-start time at Chelsea so far.

“If my mind serves me correctly they were in for Mudryk. They didn’t get him, he chose to go to Chelsea and they paid big money for him and he [Trossard] was probably the second choice,” he said on Sky Sports.

“But if you look at the two careers up to now – and there’s nothing to say that Mudryk can’t go onto still have a good career at Chelsea – but he’s [Trossard] been a brilliant signing. He comes up with vital goals. He gives you width, he’s comfortable on the ball.

“When you’re looking to add players to the squad you have to make sure you bring in the right type and he’s certainly that. £27m is an absolute bargain for a tremendous player, technically good that can nick a goal. I know Odegaard got the second but that was a huge moment for their season.”
