Arsene Wenger has risked the wrath of Ollie Watkins by saying Aston Villa’s victory over Arsenal was a “complete surprise”.

Watkins has already called out Troy Deeney and Simon Jordan after Villa’s 2-0 win against the Gunners in the Premier League. Deeney had questioned Watkins’ conversion ratio in front of goal and Jordan wrote off Villa’s chances of beating Mikel Arteta’s side.

Now Wenger has expressed his total shock that Unai Emery’s side beat Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last Sunday, despite the fact Villa had already beaten them 1-0 in the Premier League earlier this season thanks to a goal from John McGinn.

Goals from Leon Bailey and Watkins helped Villa complete the league double over Arsenal. And speaking to beIN Sports, former Gunners manager Wenger delivered his verdict, saying: "It was a complete surprise.

"You know that when you play for the championship at home with eight games to go and you have the opportunity to make a difference, you have to take it.”
