The artisan butchers near Greater Manchester that's serving up one of the best pork pies in the country

An artisan butchers located just outside Greater Manchester has been named as having one of the best pork pies in the country.

Mettrick’s, which is based in Glossop in Derbyshire, has scooped two national prizes at this year’s Smithfield Awards, which is a prestigious and long-standing ceremony organised by the Q Guild of Butchers that recognises the finest in craft butchery products across the UK.

The family butchers, which has a history stemming over 100 years, received a Diamond award for its Pork and Caramelised Onion Pie - which scored 67 points out of a possible 70 from a panel of independent industry judges which included Masterchef champion Gary Maclean.

The pork pie secured the top spot after being heralded for its “exceptional pastry and perfectly blended flavours”. Using free-range pork, the pie regularly sells out at local farmer’s markets and at the Mettrick’s shop, which is located on Glossop’s High Street West.

Mettrick’s also claimed the top award in the BBQ Product Category with its Tandoori Lamb Lollipops, which were described by the panel as “excellent” and scored 68 out of 70 points.

The Derbyshire butchers prides itself on sourcing the majority of its meat from farms within the Peak District, the North West and Midlands, with all cattle having travelled no further than 35 miles. It also sells ready meals, pasties, bread, haggis and 'butchers boxes', comprising a selection of meat that will feed eight people.

In the past, Mettrick’s has also been named Britain's Best Butcher and Best Online Butcher, whilst owner John Mettrick has also received the coveted title of ‘Master Butcher’ - the highest accolade a butcher can achieve with only around a handful named across the UK.

Owner John, who is a third-generation of the Mettrick family, said: “It’s fantastic to get national recognition for these products which our whole team has developed and been involved with.

“Our Tandoori Lamb Lollipops are the inspiration of one of our managers who loves Indian cooking. He makes his own spice mix and marinade, and our customers absolutely love it. We’ve been selling these all through the winter even though they are a barbecue product!

“We’re also delighted our Pork and Caramelised Onion Pie has won as it’s always challenging to incorporate a fresh ingredient into a pork pie, however the secret is to ensure the moisture levels are just right!”

The Smithfield Awards recognise products with either a Bronze, Silver or Gold award by the judges, with Gold products then pitched against each other to be named the category champion for each Diamond Award.

Gordon Wallace, manager of the Q Guild, said: “The standard of entries this year was extremely high so being crowned best in class for their pork pie and BBQ product alongside two additional golds, two silvers and three bronzes for other meat products is an outstanding achievement for Mettrick’s.”
