Asda customers have voiced their disapproval as the supermarket makes major alterations to its loyalty scheme. As of Thursday (April 25), Blue Light Card holders will accumulate less money in their cash rewards pot due to drastic changes instituted by Asda.

The Blue Light Card provides discount privileges to personnel of the NHS and other emergency services, with some retail outlets offering a reduction of up to 30%. Prior to the alteration, Asda's patrons possessing a Blue Light Card would be afforded a 10% markdown on fresh produce via the Asda Rewards app - but this concession has been lowered to 5% effective today.

The news has sparked a deluge of unhappy social media responses. One disgruntled shopper expressed: "Such a shame! I don't think it will be worth going to Asda over Aldi."

Another commented: "No point going Asda anymore."

A third wrote: "It's been great while it lasted... 5% is better than nothing.", reports the Mirror.

However, another retorted: "People complaining about something they get for free will always baffle me.."

This serves as the second significant swing that Asda has staged for Blue Light Card holders within the past year. The range of discounts available was scaled back last June, causing fewer products to be eligible for cost reductions.

Prior to this change, an additional 10% cashbacks on items such as homeware, fresh and non-fresh foods, pet and laundry offerings, health and beauty commodities, baby goods, outdoor equipment, and toys were granted. From June 15, however, these wide-ranging benefits have been limited to fresh food items alone.

As part of its reward programs, Asda allows shoppers to earn "Asda Pounds" by purchasing certain items in the store and scanning the Asda Rewards app. Shoppers can also earn "Asda Pounds" by completing "missions" in stores within a timeframe, such as spending a certain amount on fruit and vegetables.

Since 2022, Asda has collaborated with Blue Light Card, helping card holders save millions on their shopping. In addition, Asda continues to offer new and exclusive ways for card holders to boost their Asda Rewards Cashpots, including a 5% back in Cashpots on fresh food purchases.
