From the ashes - we try out the Newland Ave coffee shop with a hidden oasis

It's hard to beat an iced coffee in the sun.

Hull has plenty of great coffee shop options - with many of them being found on The Avenues. But one of them has quite an interesting backstory.

Earlier this year, Villa Natura reopened after a fire caused by a faulty cake fridge in 2021 destroyed the intimate coffee shop. I went along to try the new incarnation.

The bright orange walls gave the shop a colourful look. Above the counter was a huge list of coffees and teas from all over the world - enough to fill four blackboards with astonishingly, which was a bit overwhelming. I was handed a food menu .

There were as salads and light bites, but I fancied the chicken toastie, swilled down with an iced mocha - £11.60 all in. The mocha was sweet, milky and satisfied that caffeine craving, and the toastie soon followed.

The white bread was golden brown - crisp to perfection. The mayo was creamy, and the peppers gave it a tasteful crunch. The chicken was plentiful, and the oozing cheese covered the meat - a perfect brunch-worthy toastie.

But the best was yet to come. As I headed to the toilet I noticed a rather stunning back garden filled with greenery and seating.

While it was a bit overcast, you got the impression immediately that it was a suntrap hidden away.

I commented on the garden to the person working, and they said that it has the most sunlight hours possible. Although I was the only person in the cafe at that moment in time, I can imagine in peak times everyone would flock to this suntrap for hours on end.
