Ashlee Simpson rejected purity ring from her dad

Ashlee Simpson has revealed she rejected the idea of wearing a "purity ring" when she was 12 years old.

The singer told Broad Ideas podcast hosts Rachel Bilson and Olivia Unwin that her dad Joe Simpson attempted to give her the ring.

Purity rings are seen as a public pledge to remain celibate until marriage.

"(My dad) tried to give me one at 12 and I was like, 'Oh, no thank you. I will (not) be telling you when I am having sex,'" she said. "I think (when I was) younger, too, I would come off way more rebellious than I was. Because I was like, 'Oh no, I'm not doing that.'"

Ashlee's big sister Jessica Simpson wore a purity ring until she married Nick Lachey in 2002.

"I would see how my dad would be like, 'You can't talk to this guy.' (Or like), 'Here's your ring to save yourself,'" Ashlee said.

Ashlee, now 39, married Pete Wentz in 2008 and the couple split in 2011. In 2014, she married Evan Ross.

The singer is keen to have an open dialogue about sex with her own children, Bronx, 15, Jagger, eight, and Ziggy, three.

"It's so interesting having a 15-year-old," she said of Bronx. "(To) have those open conversations, I feel like it's so important. (Anything) other than that, your kids are going to be hiding things from you."
