Aston Villa’s only rivals for a top-four finish in the Premier League, Tottenham, have been dealt a double injury blow ahead of a huge match against Chelsea.

Spurs can close the gap to fourth-placed Villa to four points with victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night, while Unai Emery’s side are in Europa Conference League action against Olympiacos.

The match against Chelsea is one of Tottenham’s two games in hand on Villa. But Ange Postecoglou’s side have been hit by injuries to Ben Davies and Timo Werner, who have both been ruled out for the rest of the season. Werner was forced off against Arsenal on Sunday with a hamstring issue, while Davies sustained a calf injury during the match.

“Yeah, not good unfortunately,” Postecoglou said of Werner on Wednesday. “He’s had a couple of issues from the game with his hamstring. We only have two-and-a-half weeks to go, so he’ll miss the rest of the season.

“Ben Davies got a calf injury and he’ll miss the rest of the season as well.

“It’s unfortunate for Benny and understandable because he hasn’t started a game for ages. We haven’t had fixtures to rotate so it’s inevitable he’ll pick up an injury.”

Oliver Skipp will return, but Spurs remain without Fraser Forster (foot), Ryan Sessegnon (thigh), Destiny Udogie (hamstring) and Manor Solomon (knee).
