I ate at a bustling Hull restaurant that was absolutely packed on a Tuesday

I recently went out in Hull mid-week and was on the hunt for a place to eat that was open on Tuesdays.

A lot of the independent restaurants in Hull (quite understandably) close on Mondays and Tuesdays so the owners can have a break and catch up on their admin. So I felt lucky to stumble upon Tanyalak Thai restaurant in George Street which was not only open but incredibly busy.

I hadn't booked and was fortunate there was still a free table because the restaurant quickly filled up. My impression was that it was very clean and the food smelled amazing.

The decor was neutral with white walls, wooden tables, and cheerful pops of colour from canteen-style chairs in red and blue. The open kitchen means you can see the chefs preparing your food and delicious aromas of fried onion and noodles constantly waft through, tempting your appetite.

I ordered a Cha Keaw (Thai iced green tea) and was impressed at the cocktail-style drink that arrived, complete with a cute little umbrella and blue straw. The first sip was very sweet, like condensed milk, then the other flavours came through and it was delicious.

I could taste notes of green tea and something sweet but also robust that reminded me of a strong honey. Overall, it made for a surprisingly complex and refreshing drink - something a bit more special than a simple milkshake.

There was a large menu, with a selection of curries, stir-fries, soups, noodles, fish, and salads. My favourite Thai dish is red curry, but I often make it myself at home so decided to try something else.

I picked the "Phad Khing" with jasmine rice and "Phad Thai" which is a noodle dish many people will be familiar with. The Phad Khing was a mouthwatering blend of fresh ginger, spring onions and red peppers in oyster sauce.

The tamarind sauce with the Phad Thai was gorgeous - it tasted very light but full of flavour and not oversweet. The noodles were the perfect texture and the crunch of peanuts was heavenly.

I wish I'd had more room - I'd have loved to have tried the Phak Tod (deep fried vegetables in light batter) or the spring rolls. I didn't see desserts on the menu, but if you have a sweet tooth I'd definitely recommend the refreshing iced tea.
