Netflix has released the first images from its upcoming live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender, giving fans a sneak peek at the main characters.

Released at the streamer's annual TUDUM event, the images show main cast Gordon Cormier, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu and Kiawentiio all in character.

Cormier stars as series protagonist Aang the last Air Nomad, Ousley plays Sokka, Liu will play Prince Zuko and Kiawentiio will star as Katara. The series will follow 12-year-old Aang, master of all four elements and last survivor of his nation, as he journeys to end the Fire Nation's war and bring peace to the world.

The streaming site has also released a brief teaser trailer, showing the symbols of water, earth, fire, and air alongside a confirmation that the show will premiere sometime in 2024.

Star Trek legend George Takei, Teen Wolf star Arden Cho and Prey actress Amber Midthunder have also been cast in the series, alongside Momona Tamada, Thalia Tran, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Danny Pudi, and James Sie.

Netflix's plans for a live-action remake were announced back in 2018, following the popular Nickelodeon animated series and M Night Shyamalan's 2010 movie.

However, the series has hit delays, with original series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko exiting the process in 2020 due to creative differences.

"I realised I couldn't control the creative direction of the series, but I could control how I responded," DiMartino wrote on his website at the time.

Konietzko also released his own statement via Instagram, saying the pair felt they could no longer "meaningfully guide the direction of the series".

"Mike and I are collaborative people; we did not need all the ideas to come from us," he wrote.

"As long as we felt those ideas were in line with the spirit and integrity of Avatar, we would have happily embraced them. However, we ultimately came to the belief that we would not be able to meaningfully guide the direction of the series."

Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender live action series will premiere 2024.
