While Avengers: Endgame has been smashing box office records left, right and centre, it seems it may not quite soar to the highest high after all.

The Marvel blockbuster recently toppled Titanic to become the second-highest grossing movie of all time, with only Avatar standing in its way.

The 2009 James Cameron movie stands at $2.78 billion at the global box office to Endgame's $2.62 billion (via Box Office Mojo).

However, according to some industry experts, the Marvel movie now faces a stiff uphill battle, having used up its big potential following the first few weeks of release.

"It's slowed down more than we all expected,” Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice Media, told The Hollywood Reporter.

While he previously forecast Endgame breaking Avatar's record around mid-June, he has now suggested it *could* happen on Labor Day in September... if it even happens at all.

"No movie had opened on that level, globally," he added, suggesting Endgame did the "lion's share" of its big business in its first few weeks.

"Avatar was all about the marathon and now it's about the sprint," added Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore.

"If it performs like it has been up to this point, there is about a $10 million to $20 million margin that falls half north and half south of Avatar," Robbins added. "But it would be surprising if Disney didn't get it there somehow."

Avengers: Endgame is out now.
