New research has revealed the average salary needed to afford a home in an Essex city. The average cost of a home was calculated by GoCompare using 2024 figures from HM Land Registry.

The figures were provided by the company's salary checker tool, which allows buyers to see what they need to earn to buy a property in their area. You can also check house prices across various property types, including flats, terraces, and semi-detached or detached homes.

Southend-on-Sea is the 10th most expensive place to buy a home in the UK, with an average house price of £391,438. The salary required to buy the average house is £77,882.

Other places in the top 10 include London, Cambridge, Brighton, Oxford, and Edinburgh. In London, the average house price is £674,698, requiring a salary of £134,241 to buy a home.

Southend-on-Sea also made the list of top 10 most expensive areas in 2019, coming in at number nine. In 2019, the average house price was £335,123, requiring a salary of £66,678 to buy.

The coastal city on the Thames Estuary is an attractive place to live, with London within commuting distance. It is also home to the longest pleasure pier in the world.

"The more affordable places in the UK were mainly in the Midlands and the North of England," a GoCompare spokesperson said. "The most expensive area in the UK to buy a house is England, where a semi-detached property costs on average more than £287,000."

The most affordable places to buy a property in the UK were Burnley, Middlesbrough, and Stoke-on-Trent. The average house price in Burnley is £116,824, requiring a salary of £23,244 to buy.
