Avery Pohl Officially Exits “General Hospital” After Character’s Probable Death
Avery Pohl's last episode as character Esme aired on Wednesday
Avery Pohl has left General Hospital.
A spokesperson for the ABC drama confirmed to Soap Opera Digest that Pohl’s final episode aired on Wednesday. PEOPLE reached out to ABC for further comment.
The episode saw Pohl’s character Esme meet a watery grave after she attempted to murder two others on a yacht. Esme injected her ex Spencer with a cocktail of drugs in an attempt to kill him. Then, she turned to his girlfriend, Trina.
But Spencer took the opportunity to wrestle Esme away. In a fated turn of events, both Spencer and Esme fell overboard, and were presumed dead as the episode ended.

Pohl knew her vengeful character wasn’t always received well by audience members — as she often took the role of a villain. “At the end of the day, my job is to help tell a story and to entertain people, and if people are entertained by the fact that they love to loathe me, then I guess my job is done!” she previously told Soap Opera Digest.
Behind the scenes, though, Pohl formed a strong friendship with Tabyana Ali — who plays Trina, the woman Esme tried to kill. “We talk and hang out frequently, but I hate that I’m not going to see her at work. I’ll still call her every day but I am going to miss seeing her at work,” Ali told the publication. But Pohl’s final day on set was one of praise from her costars. “The day that Avery left was a very tearful day. We all gave her hugs and flowers and gifts. It was a bittersweet thing.”
General Hospital is no stranger to phasing out — and phasing in — characters as the intense, emotional series carries on. The show is now considered the longest running soap opera with 61 seasons and more than 15,000 episodes.
