An award-winning Falmouth fish and chip shop has been named by the Queen's son, Tom Parker Bowles, as one of his favourites in the UK. The 49-year-old food critic and food writer has no doubt sampled hundreds of chippy meals during his two-decade long career - but Harbour Lights, on Arwenack Street in Falmouth, has been selected as one of his must-visit spots.

Writing for the Daily Mail, Parker Bowles today (Fri) released a list of his top 37 must-try fish and chip shops nationwide - which also included two locations in neighbouring Devon.

But in a special mention to Harbour Lights, he wrote: "They buy their fish daily from Newlyn in Cornwall, from CWT (Cornish Wildlife Trust) and MSC-accredited boats. Equally important, they are masters of the deep fat fryer, ensuring sweet, succulent cod and haddock, as fine as you’ll taste anywhere."

Parker Bowles also described fish and chips as: "Not so much a dish as a national obsession, an integral part of British heritage... Good fish and chips transcend mere location."

The food critic's list comes just days after Harbour Lights was also selected on another list - of the top 20 fish and chip shops in the UK, according to The Observer.

Earlier this month, The Observer praised the fish and chip shop for its "community focus", writing: "At this Cornish chippie, local hake is celebrated; MSC-approved choices are marked. If you eat in, mains come with unlimited chips. If you eat out, beware the seagulls."

And the Harbour Lights website also boasts that it was featured among the top 10 finalists in the 2019 National Fish and Chip Awards, by Seafish - a non-departmental public body sponsored by DEFRA.

As well as the standard fish dish offerings of cod, line-caught haddock, scampi, plaice, and home-made fishcakes, Harbour Lights also offers an extensive menu including a selection of burgers - from cod, to chicken or beef, to halloumi with sweet chilli sauce - and smaller plates such as homemade onion rings, chicken goujons, calamari, mozzarella sticks, or garlic mushrooms.

Vegetarian options include veggie sausages, vegan smoky jackfruit 'fishcakes', and vegan fish - made up of deep-fried tofu marinated in brine and lemon juice.

And those who are feeling indulgent can even dine in and enjoy the 'Fizz and Chips' meal - the line-caught haddock and chips, partnered with a glass of Prosecco, for just £19.55.
