A baby swan has been killed after getting caught in a discarded fishing line in Westbury.

In a statement, the town council said that in December, Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital was called to Vivash Park to assist with the injured bird.

After discovering the severity of the bird’s injuries the decision was made to euthanise it.

A spokesperson for the council said: “The council maintains the fishing lake at Vivash Park for public enjoyment, and as Westbury continues to develop with more homes being built, the park has become an increasingly vital sanctuary for local wildlife.

“We are committed to preserving this haven and ensuring the safety of the animals that call it home.

“We urge all individuals fishing at Vivash Park to take responsibility for keeping the environment clean by using the bins provided at each fishing peg for the disposal of fishing line.

“This simple action can prevent further harm to our wildlife. We also encourage visitors to remind others of the importance of keeping the park free from litter and dangerous debris.”
