It was the end of an era on Saturday as Sean Ward called time on his stellar Irish League career.

The Glenavon defender played his 779th and final game in a 2-1 defeat to Carrick Rangers. He was substituted in the 88th minute, manager Stephen Mc'Donnell affording the 40-year-old a hero's farewell as he was applauded off the Mourneview Park pitch.

Ward started his career with Glentoran in 2002 after coming through the Oval club's academy ranks. He went on to join Big Two rivals Linfield in 2013 where he spent four years and then he made the move to cross-city rivals Crusaders.

His final move came in 2020 when he signed for Glenavon.

Ward won every trophy going in the Irish League, including four Premiership titles and the Irish Cup.

Tributes have been pouring in for Ward following his retirement. Glenavon said on X: "The word legend is sometimes overused but in the case of @seanward_84 it’s well merited. Thanks for all you’ve given to Glenavon and more widely to the Irish League. Enjoy your retirement!"

The PFA Northern Ireland added: "When it comes to Irish League players, he’s one of the greats. What a career."

Larne defender Tomas Cosgrove said: "All the best in retirement one of the best pal."

Some of Ward's former teammates sent him good-luck messages ahead of his final game on Saturday against Carrick Rangers.

Ballymena United goalkeeper Sean O'Neill said: "The man, the myth, the Legend! A true great! Best of luck on your final game! Our sing songs will never be forgotten."

Crusaders defender Billy Joe Burns added: "All the best to my friend @seanward_84 on his final game.. The best player I've played with and against.. Lucky to have shared a changing room with you. Great Career Great Player Great Person Enjoy retirement."

One of Ward's former clubs also showed a touch of class by praising the 40-year-old on his career.

Linfield said on X: "Best wishes to former player Sean Ward who hangs up the boots. A League and Irish Cup Double winner during his time at the Blues. Thank you for the memories."

The best tribute - and funniest - came from former teammate Michael Gault who shared a hilarious throwback photo of when the pair took part in a photo shoot for Umbro alongside Mark McAllister.

Gault joked: "Congratulations on a tremendous career. Sean’s one of the best and a great friend. Now we can finally get back to our modelling career."

Ward jokingly replied: "Still have this blazer, and still haven’t grown into it."

Belfast Live would join everyone in wishing Sean a happy retirement. He's certainly earned it.
