Viewing figures for The Great British Bake Off are down for the fourth consecutive year, albeit it's only a slight dip from last year.

The Channel 4 show returned earlier this week with a new host after Alison Hammond replaced Matt Lucas, but the gradual decline in viewership continued despite the change.

The premiere for the 14th series attracted an average of 4.3 million viewers (via the Evening Standard), a 100k decrease from last year's opening episode.

The decline is noticeably smaller when compared to previous years, with 2022's premiere seeing a 1.3 million decrease from the previous year's figure.

The number is yet to include viewers from the channel's streaming service, so bosses at Channel 4 will be eager to see if the figure increases over the coming days.

The first episode saw Amos depart the tent despite securing a promising second place in the Technical challenge. The baker subsequently said that he loved his experience on the show.

"Nothing but pure love! What an amazing experience I've had," he wrote. "I can't believe how much fun I've had and what a joy to meet all the wonderful bakers I can now call my close friends. Feeling the LOVE and will always remember my Bake Off journey as the fondest of memories. Love Amos."

Amos appeared on spin-off show Bake Off: An Extra Slice to discuss his time on the show, where he shared a joke with guest panellist Stephen Mangan, who had previously revealed that he had a connection to Amos.

"I know one of the bakers – I had no idea they were in it when they came on. Amos worked at a deli for years on my street," Mangan said.

"I'd see him all the time, so as soon as he came up I was like 'Amos! I am going to enjoy watching you over the next few weeks'. And it wasn't to be – it's an outrage."

The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4 in the UK. In the US, it's known as The Great British Baking Show, and streams on Netflix.
