A giant mural of a worker removing a star from the EU flag has been created by Banksy in Dover.

The artwork was painted overnight on the Castle Amusements building near the coastal town’s ferry terminal.

Representatives for the elusive street artist confirmed the work was by Banksy. An image later appeared on his verified Instagram account.

It shows a workman on a ladder removing one of the bright yellow stars in a reference to Brexit.

The stars of the flag “stand for the ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe”, according to the EU.

The mural comes as relations between the EU and the UK deteriorated further, after Theresa May accused unknown EU officials of seeking to disrupt the General Election.

May has repeatedly told voters than only her “strong and stable” government will be able to secure a good Brexit deal.

However, Frans Timmermans, the European Commission’s first vice president, has said the EU’s negotiating line on Brexit won’t change no matter what happens in the UK’s general election.

Banksy’s Dover artwork is across the Channel from Calais, where one of his murals appeared at the main refugee camp in 2015.

It depicted Apple founder Steve Jobs, whose biological father was a Syrian immigrant.

The artist also criticised the use of teargas against refugees in Calais in January 2016 with a mural on the French embassy in London.
