Bar staff in resort where Jay Slater partied the night before vanishing left devastated as search enters second week

Bar staff working in the resort where Jay Slater partied the night before he vanished in Tenerife have been left devastated and saying its 'all they're talking about'.

The 19-year-old, from Lancashire, was reported missing a week ago, on June 17, in the rural village of Masca. It is thought he stayed there with people he met after attending the NRG music festival, at the Papagayo beach club in the bustling resort of Playa de la Americas.

For their 'first-ever Tenerife Weekender Festival', NRG promised a 'weekend of electrifying music, stunning visuals, and innovative productions', with the closing party held at the huge venue on the evening of June 16.

But a night of partying soon unravelled, as the following morning, Jay was reported missing. It is thought he had stayed at an Airbnb rental 30km away in the Rural de Teno Park, before leaving on foot and alone the following morning.

The Manchester Evening News visited the Papagayo club on Monday (June 24), where staff member Florín, who was setting up for the night, said he did not remember seeing Jay or the people he was with on the night of the closing party. He confirmed he had only followed Jay's disappearance from reading news reports.

As the major search efforts enter their second week, involving the Civil Guard, Civil Defence, mountain rescue teams and fire crews, a wave of concern has been felt by both tourists and locals across the Spanish island.

Monica, who works at Paniclub in the Playa de la Americas resort, situated close to the bustling nightclub strip, has said it's 'all they've been talking about', as a local hotel worker said she was 'heartbroken'.

When asked how she felt about the search, which has not yet been successful in finding missing Jay, Monica told the M.E.N: "Everybody here is living nice and happy, so it's very sad news. It's horrible, horrible.

"Yesterday I was off and we were speaking the whole day about him. It's all we are talking about, the local people. It's everywhere in the media, it's so sad."

Monica explained that tourists enjoying the nightlife often drink to excess and that there is a 'problem with drugs', mainly cannabis and cocaine. When the M.E.N visited the resort, we were offered both drugs a number of times by men standing on street corners holding business cards.

"Everybody here is looking for fun and drinks. People could go out partying and get lost here, in the nighttime it can be dangerous."

Maria, who works at a hotel next door to the bar, added: "It's breaking my heart. Especially for myself, because I have a 19-year-old son. I hope he is okay."

It was reported that Jay had travelled to the remote holiday rental, around half a mile north of Masca, in the mountainous Rural de Teno Park on Sunday night (June 16) after spending the night partying.
