In a celebration of the late actor's life hosted by David Walliams, Mitchell opened up about their relationship, saying: "I was blessed to have crossed paths with Barbara."

He added: "On paper, it shouldn’t have worked, but it did with us and I am so thankful that she chose me to share her life with because I don’t think I will ever find another."

Mitchell, 59, is also releasing a book in which he details his life with Windsor, who he married in 2000.

In an extract from the memoir shared with The Sun, Mitchell wrote of their sex life: "On only our second date Bar had talked to me in detail about her many, many conquests. She said it was always good to brush the cobwebs away. Ours was not an open relationship, but it wasn’t a closed book either."

Windsor was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2014, but kept her diagnosis private until 2018 after her condition worsened.

At the time, Mitchell said: "I'm doing this because I want us to be able to go out and, if something isn't quite right, it will be OK because people will now know that she has Alzheimer's and will accept it for what it is."

He continued: "I hope speaking out will help other families dealing with loved ones who have this cruel disease. Secondly, I want the public to know because they are naturally very drawn to Barbara and she loves talking to them."

Windsor first joined EastEnders in 1994 as Peggy Mitchell and would play the role on and off until 2016 when the character died of cancer.

She was also known for her roles in nine Carry On films.
