"Oppenheimer" and "Poor Things" make huge strides in the Oscars race, while "Saltburn" and "The Color Purple" surge — despite another Taraji P. Henson snub.

The Critics Choice Awards have chosen the best films and movie performances of the year, cementing top contenders in the awards race just one month before the Oscars nominations are revealed.

Barbie led in total nominations at its second major awards body of the year, doubling the amount of Golden Globes nominations it received on Monday after scoring 18 overall nominations from the Critics Choice Awards — including Best Picture, Best Director (Greta Gerwig), Best Actress (Margot Robbie), and Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling).

Trailing behind Barbie are Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Yorgos Lanthimos' Poor Things, both of which earned 13 nominations, followed closely by Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, which earned yet another Best Actress nod for Lily Gladstone as she continues to sweep the circuit.

Notably absent from the Critics Choice Awards nominations are both Natalie Portman (May December) and Annette Bening (Nyad) in Best Actress, Anatomy of a Fall in Best Picture, Willem Dafoe (Poor Things) in Best Supporting Actor, and another shocking snub for Taraji P. Henson for her brilliant work in The Color Purple, despite the film earning an Ensemble nomination.

Earlier this week, Barbie stormed the Golden Globes nominations with nine overall nods, followed by Oppenheimer with eight, Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things with seven, and Past Lives with five.

According to EW's awards season tracker, the Critics Choice Awards nominations keep Killers of the Flower Moon at the front of the race as the top contender for Best Picture, with Leonardo DiCaprio (Killers), Gladstone (Killers), Gosling (Barbie), and Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers), statistically ranking atop the acting races to date.

While the Critics Choice Awards (voted on by a collective of broadcast, print, and digital journalists) offer a significant platform — including a televised ceremony — for contenders in the awards conversation, the group's nominations don't reflect Oscar voting patterns as much as they predict them. The two organizations don't share crossover membership, but the Critics Choice Awards regularly anoint (mostly) the same winners and nominees each year.

Recently, both the Academy and the Critics Choice Awards have shared mutual Best Picture winners multiple times — including last year's dual winner Everything Everywhere All at Once. Other films that have won Best Picture at both ceremonies across the last decade are 12 Years a Slave, Spotlight, The Shape of Water, and Nomadland.

When it comes to acting contenders, the Critics Choice Awards and Oscars tend to share between three and five nominees in the leading and supporting categories.

The 2024 Critics Choice Awards — hosted by Chelsea Handler — air Sunday, Jan. 14 on the CW. See the full list of nominees below.
