Barnsley move for Cheltenham Town goalkeeping coach James Bittner

Cheltenham Town goalkeeping coach James Bittner has left the club to join Barnsley, where he will link up with former Robins boss Darrell Clarke.

The 42-year-old has been at Cheltenham for the last two seasons, taking over from Dan Watson in the summer of 2022 after a spell at Reading.

Clarke told Barnsley's official website: “I am delighted to welcome James to the club and add him to my coaching staff at Oakwell.

“Having worked with him at Cheltenham Town, I know that James builds fantastic relationships with the keepers he works with and develops their all-round game.

“James comes highly rated in the industry and I’m sure he will settle in well here and make an impact.”

As revealed by Gloucestershire Live, Bittner's job is set to be filled by Joe Day, who played under new Robins boss Michael Flynn at Newport County AFC.

Day will also be understudy to the returning Owen Evans, who has agreed to sign for Cheltenham after leaving Walsall this summer.

Max Harris has been made available for transfer after four years at Whaddon Road.

Cheltenham play their first pre-season friendly of the summer at Southern League Division One South side Bishop's Cleeve on Friday night (7.45pm).
