Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan says the Owls have been given a mighty confidence boost in their fight to avoid relegation from the Championship.

The midfielder played an important role in his team’s 3-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers on Sunday afternoon, a result that lifts Wednesday out of the bottom three for the first time since August. It also plunges Birmingham City into the drop zone with only two games to go.

And Bannan, who as a former Aston Villa player and has never hidden his delight at winding up anyone with Blues sympathies, says Wednesday will now go into their games with West Brom and Sunderland with added belief.

“It adds to the confidence,” he told Sky Sports. “Nothing’s done today. It’s obviously a big result on the way to where we want to be but we have got two more massive games that we need to take wins from. It’s one job done, we’ll have a rest tomorrow and get back to working through the week and we know how big next week is going to be as well.”

Former Blues boss John Eustace, who started the season at St Andrew’s and had his team in the play-off places before he was sacked, is now in charge at Blackburn, whose own situation near the bottom three became more perilous after Rovers gifted three poor goals.

“It’s a knock back,” Eustace admitted. “It’s very important we get back on the horse and don’t get too disappointed about things. We stick together, it’s still in our own hands and we have a game next Saturday to put things right.

“There’s been worry since I have come in. the main thing for us is to stay in the league and the character and togetherness the group has shown to do that up to now has been good. We have had a knock back today the manner we conceded the goals wasn’t good enough but we have got a magnificent opportunity next week to put things right.”
