Humphries - who was 87 at the time - praised O’Leary for his bravery when it was in fact Schofield who had revealed his sexuality back in February 2020.

Fans on Twitter shared the clip as they looked back on the funny moment fondly.

The Dame Edna star was discussing his “very good memory” with O’Leary and co-host Alison Hammond when he made the hilarious faked mix-up.

He said: “And incidentally I want to congratulate you by the way, seriously, on your courage.”

As Hammond erupted into laughter he continued: “Last year, no, no, when he came out and told us about his sexuality. Because I think a lot of people respected you for that.”

O’Leary then replied: “Thank you. I'll pass that on to the gentleman who's here from Monday to Thursday.”
