The UK has announced who has the iconic job of reading the scores at Eurovision Song Contest 2024. A much-loved actress and activist has been picked to read out the scores for the country.

The 2024 contest is being held in Sweden, after Loreen won in 2023 with her song Tattoo. Graham Norton revealed on BBC The One Show that Joanna Lumley, best known for her role as Patsy Stone in the BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, would be taking on the role.

He announced: "I can reveal that the person giving out the UK jury votes on the night will be Joanna Lumley. How has she not done it before? It seems so perfect."

Host Alex Jones asked if he thought she might read out the scores 'like Patsy'. Graham said it would be great with 'champagne and cigarettes'.

The grand final will be at the Malmo Arena on Saturday 11 May. Sweden will be the first country to perform, after a random draw.

The semi-finals are on Tuesday 7 and Thursday 9 May. Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK are guaranteed places in the final, so do not compete in either semi-final.

However, the host country and "big five" will perform their songs during the semi-finals. Fifteen countries will compete in the first semi-final on Tuesday 7 May, including Croatia, Ireland, Ukraine and Australia.

Sixteen countries will feature in the second semi-final on Thursday 9 May, including Austria, Denmark, Greece and Israel.

Others may remember Patsy for her role in The Avengers, but many will not remember that she has also starred in Coronation Street. Cast as Elaine Perkins, Ken Barlow's (played by Bill Roach) girlfriend, Lumley looked a lot different with long brunette locks instead of her signature blonde hair.

Her stint may have been brief, with just eight episodes under her belt, but her character left a lasting impact, especially after turning down a marriage proposal from the notorious charmer Ken. During a chat with Gyles Brandreth on his Rosebud podcast, she said: "Ken Barlow proposed to me and my character said no! " she shared, revealing that this led to the public "hate" her.
