BBC and ITV viewers were distracted by a detail in the background as Rishi Sunak issued his resignation.

The former Prime Minister stepped down as Conservative leader as he led the party to a historic defeat in the general election. Mr Sunak addressed the nation outside 10 Downing Street this morning as he issued an apology to the country.

He said: "I will shortly be seeing His Majesty the King to offer my resignation as Prime Minister. To the country, I would like to say first and foremost, I am sorry.

“I have given this job my all, but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change. And yours is the only judgment that matters.

“I have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility for this loss. Following this result I will step down as party leader – not immediately, but once the formal arrangements for selecting my successor are in place.

“It is important that after 14 years in government the Conservative Party rebuilds, but also that it takes up its crucial role in opposition professionally and effectively.”

Mr Sunak was joined by his wife, Akshata Murty, outside Downing Street as he gave his thanks to his family. He said: "I’d like to thank my colleagues, my Cabinet, the Civil Service, especially here in Downing Street. The team at Chequers, my staff, CCHQ.

“But, most of all, I’d like to express my gratitude to my wife Akshata and our beautiful daughters. I can never thank them enough for the sacrifices they have made so that I might serve our country.”"

However, viewers following the coverage on BBC and ITV were distracted as Ms Murty was holding an umbrella. When Mr Sunak announced the general election, he was drenched by torrential rain and this has remained at the forefront of viewers' minds as many on social media platform X were distracted by the background detail in his resignation speech.

Chris said: "Sunak bit late with that umbrella" Edward added: "Rishi Sunak giving his resignation speech while his wife, Akshata Murty, loiters in the background with an umbrella is quite... er... odd?"

Sophie commented: Sunak's wife is carrying an umbrella." Steve posted: "I don't believe it! Mrs Sunak has brought an umbrella!"
