BBC News presenter forced off air as she's 'out of action'

A BBC News presenter has said she is "out of action" and will be taking months off having had surgery.

Karin Giannone regularly appears on BBC News but on Thursday the 50-year-old said she has undergone a significant knee osteotomy operation. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, she said: "I’m out of action for a couple of months after a knee osteotomy surgery, but very much looking forward to being back on air on @BBCNews when I am up and running again!

"(*not actually running - that won’t happen for a while)"

Fans and colleagues have been quick to send messages of support as Yasmin Khatun Dewan said: "Wishing you a speedy recovery Karin xx". Shayan Sardarizadeh said: "Best wishes to you, Karin. Get well soon" and Will Guyatt said: "Get well soon!"

Stephen said: "That sounds painful wishing you a a speedy recovery Karin" and Roddy said: "Steady but speedy recovery Karin. Take care of yourself".

Karin is a main presenter on BBC World News and has been at the BBC since 2005, having made the move from Sky.

The South African-born news presenter joined BBC News in 2005.

She presented live coverage from South Africa following the death of Nelson Mandela in 2013.
