Strictly Come Dancing star Kai Widdrington found himself being flooded with messages as he enjoyed a very special trip with his mum. The dancer is known for starring as one of the professional dancers in the BBC One dance contest after joining back in 2021.

The Junior World Latin American champion joined the hit competition show after three years on the Irish version of Dancing with the Stars, which cames years after he reached the final of the sixth series of Britain's Got Talent. in 2012.

But this week, Kai's work took himself away from the ballroom and to one of the most recognisable locations in the country - if not the world.

The dancer joined the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award team for a special event and the 28-year-old took his mum along as his plus one.

Sharing pictures of the pair looking fabulous in co-ordinated blue ensembles, Kai wrote on Instagram: "Feeling very proud today - not only do I get to go to Buckingham Palace to meet the amazing Duke of Edinburgh himself and @dofeuk team to talk about getting ballroom dancing into the school curriculum, but I get to take the person who inspired me - my mum."

Kai, who is the son of former Premier League footballer Tommy Widdrington while his younger brother, Theo, currently plays for Aldershot Town F.C, added: "Whatever you do in life do it with 100% of your energy and never stop dreaming."

Strictly co-star Johannes Radebe was quick to respond to the post, writing: "Love this Kai, mama must be so proud," while the dance show's 2023 contestant Angela Scanlon replied: "Dream team."

And fans were quick to react as they shared praise for Kai as well as their surprise over his mum. @missbeckyevs saod: "Your Mum does not look old enough to be your Mum!! Congratulations!" @clarebear1806 commented: "Love this. You both look amazing. Your Mum is definitely inspirational. And so are you Kai."
