Work begins on moving disused Cambridgeshire railway station to new home
Work to move a disused Cambridgeshire railway station to a new location has begun. The Wansford Road station will be moved brick by brick to a new home at the Nene Valley Railway.
The station is in the path of a proposed new dual carriageway on the A47. National Highways launched a project to save the station after it had been boarded up and abandoned for several years.
Dismantling the station has now begun, according to a Nene Valley Railway (NVR) spokesperson. Plans to rebuild the station house as a gateway to Railworld and NVR were approved by Peterborough City Council last year.

An NVR spokesperson said: "Delayed by a few issues, including the need to relocate a population of pipistrelle bats, we finally have started to take off the roof. An ecologist has been retained to keep an eye on proceedings and watch out for the bats and other wildlife."
Material from the building will be transported by night to a compound at Railworld via the A47. The process is expected to take eight to 10 weeks.
"We are current comparing quotations for the rebuild – these are coming in higher than we expected and we're looking at additional fundraising options," the NVR spokesperson added. "Our target is to have the building up by March/April next year but that (of course) does depend on many things – not just the money."
